FFL Transfer Information
Everything you need to know about buying firearms online
What is an FFL Transfer?
A Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer is the legal process by which a firearm purchased online is shipped from our facility to a licensed gun dealer (FFL) in your area, where you then take possession of the weapon after completing the required background check and paperwork.
This process is mandated by federal law under the Gun Control Act of 1968. All interstate transfers of handguns and long guns must be conducted through a licensed FFL dealer. This ensures that every firearm purchase is documented and that buyers meet all legal requirements.
Step-by-Step Process
Browse & Purchase Online
Select your firearm from our catalog. Proceed through checkout and pay securely. You will be asked to provide your local FFL dealer’s information during checkout.
Find Your Local FFL Dealer
Use the ATF’s online FFL dealer search at ffllicense.atf.gov to find a licensed dealer near you. Most local gun shops, Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, and pawn shops with gun sections are FFL dealers. Call ahead to confirm they accept incoming transfers and ask about their transfer fee (typically $20-$50).
Provide FFL Dealer Information
Email or provide your local FFL dealer’s name, address, and FFL license number to us at [email protected]. Your dealer can fax or email us their signed copy of their FFL license. We will not ship until we have confirmed dealer information on file.
We Ship Your Firearm
Once we have your dealer’s FFL information, we will ship your firearm directly to them via UPS or FedEx with adult signature required, full insurance, and tracking. Most orders ship within 1-2 business days and arrive within 1-3 days of shipping.
Complete the Legal Transfer
When your firearm arrives, your local FFL dealer will contact you. Visit them with valid government-issued photo ID. You will complete ATF Form 4473 (Firearms Transaction Record) and consent to a NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) background check. If approved, you take possession of your firearm. The entire process typically takes 15-30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does the entire process take?
From order to pickup, most customers complete the process within 5-7 business days. We ship within 1-2 days of receiving your FFL dealer information, and firearms typically arrive at your dealer within 1-3 business days.
Q: What happens if my background check is delayed?
If the NICS check results in a “delay” instead of immediate approval, federal law allows up to 3 business days for the check to complete. If no determination is made within 3 business days, the dealer may legally transfer the firearm at their discretion, though many choose to wait.
Q: Can I ship directly to my home?
Handguns cannot be shipped directly to private citizens — they must go through an FFL dealer. Long guns (rifles and shotguns) can be shipped interstate under certain conditions, but we still recommend using an FFL dealer for all purchases to ensure full legal compliance.
Q: What if I live in a state with additional requirements?
Some states (California, New York, New Jersey, etc.) have additional requirements beyond federal law. It is your responsibility to know and comply with your state’s laws. We will not ship to states where the purchased firearm is prohibited.
