The AR-9 80% Lower Receiver Assembly is engineered specifically for the growing community of pistol-caliber AR builders who prefer the 9mm Luger cartridge for home defense, competition shooting, or simply the economical training opportunities that higher-volume, lower-cost 9mm ammunition provides. Building a 9mm AR platform on an 80% lower allows the builder to create a legally registered personal-use firearm with the desired configuration from the ground up.
The AR-9 lower differs from a standard 5.56 lower in several critical areas that this receiver correctly implements. The magazine well is configured to accept double-stack 9mm magazines in the Glock pattern — the most widely adopted pistol-caliber AR standard — accepting all Glock 17 and compatible magazines including extended 33-round variants. The magazine catch is positioned and dimensioned for Glock-pattern magazines rather than STANAG pattern.
The last-round bolt hold-open feature is modified for compatibility with Glock magazine followers. Glock 9mm followers incorporate a paddle that engages the modified bolt catch during the final round, providing the same last-round hold-open functionality that rifle-caliber AR-15 users expect. This feature simplifies rapid reloads and serves as a clear visual and tactile indicator of an empty magazine.
The lower receiver is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum billet with all standard AR-15 external features: mil-spec buffer tube threads, pivot and takedown pin channels, magazine well (modified for 9mm as described), bolt catch pocket, magazine release recess, and selector switch hole. The 80% completion required is identical to a standard 5.56 lower — fire control pocket and trigger/hammer pin holes — using the same jig systems that work for standard AR-15 lowers.
The AR-9 80% Lower is finished in a Type III hard-coat anodize that provides a matte black appearance and maximum surface hardness. The anodize penetrates the aluminum rather than coating over it, making it integral with the base material and impervious to the peeling and flaking that plague spray-on finishes under sustained use conditions.
Compatible with any standard AR-9 upper receiver assembly designed for Glock-pattern magazines. Ships with jig compatibility guide and a parts sourcing guide for completing an AR-9 build including recommended upper receiver manufacturers, bolt carrier groups, barrel options, and 9mm buffer specifications.
