California shooters watch new pistol releases differently from the rest of the country, because the question is never just whether the gun is good. The CZ DUTY 4.0 is good: a striker-fired 9x19 on a serialized internal chassis, fiberglass-reinforced polymer frame, direct-mount optics-ready slide with fixed sights, 4-inch unthreaded barrel. CZ's refined SFDA trigger pulls at 5.6±0.9 lbs with a 4 mm reset. The second question, whether a California dealer can transfer it, is one your dealer confirms before anything ships.

The line is four models. The DUTY 4.0 C is the compact at 15+1 (17+1 with the extended base plate), 770 g and 135 mm tall. The DUTY 4.0 F is the full-size at 17+1 (19+1 extended), 780 g and 143 mm tall. MS versions add a manual thumb safety. From Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Riverside to San Diego, up to San Jose, Oakland, San Carlos and Sacramento, the buyers asking about it want a home-defense and range pistol with a red dot on top. MSRP $729.

Compact means 15+1 rounds in a frame 135 mm (5.3 in) high. Fit the extended floor plate and it holds 17+1. At 770 g (27.2 oz) unloaded it sits between a pocket pistol and a full-size gun, which is exactly where a carry-and-bedside 9mm belongs.

MS stands for manual safety. This model adds a thumb lever to the automatic safeties every DUTY has: the firing pin block, the trigger safety and the trigger-bar safety. Agencies and shooters who want a positive on/off control choose this version; the trigger itself is unchanged.

What is new under the slide is the serial-numbered modular chassis. The serial number lives on the internal chassis, not on the polymer grip, so the grip frame is a part you can change while the gun stays the same gun. Around it CZ put a reworked SFDA striker trigger, rated at 25 ± 4 N (5.6 ± 0.9 lbs) with a 4 mm (0.16 in) reset and 9 ± 1 mm (0.4 ± 0.04 in) of travel, and a slide cut for direct-mount optics. CZ's own photos show it wearing Holosun, Aimpoint and Shield red dots.

Who is it for: daily carry, a bedside gun that also rides along, and new shooters who want one pistol for everything. If you already shoot a P-10, the DUTY is the next step in the same family, with a new chassis and the optics done right.

You need a Firearm Safety Certificate, and your California dealer runs DROS and the 10-day waiting period before release. Because the DUTY 4.0 is a new release, your dealer confirms it can be transferred in California, on the DOJ roster or under an exemption, before we ship. Name your dealer at checkout and the pistol goes to them. Ammunition ships to a licensed California ammunition vendor for pickup; optics and most parts ship to your door.

Questions buyers ask: Is the CZ DUTY 4.0 on the California handgun roster? It is a new release, so do not assume it is. Your California dealer confirms roster status or an exemption before we ship anything. What do I need to pick it up in California? A Firearm Safety Certificate, then your dealer runs DROS and the 10-day waiting period before release. Your dealer will walk you through the rest. What does MS mean on the CZ DUTY 4.0 C MS? Manual safety. It adds a thumb lever to the firing pin block, trigger safety and trigger-bar safety that every DUTY has.
